5 Signs It's Time to Change Your Benefits Broker

Your benefits broker should be a strategic partner, not just someone who delivers your renewal once a year. Here are five signs you may have the wrong one.

Most employers choose a benefits broker once and never think about it again. The broker handles the renewal, maybe helps with open enrollment, and otherwise stays in the background.

That is fine if your broker is genuinely working to optimize your benefits program. But many employers are unknowingly stuck with a broker who is doing the bare minimum while collecting significant commissions on their account.

Here are five signs that it might be time to evaluate your broker relationship.

1. They Only Show Up at Renewal Time

If the only time you hear from your broker is when your renewal arrives, that is a problem. A good broker is a year-round strategic partner, not a once-a-year delivery service.

Between renewals, your broker should be analyzing your claims data, identifying cost reduction opportunities, helping with compliance issues, supporting your HR team during open enrollment, and proactively bringing you ideas and strategies.

If your broker disappears for 10 months of the year and then shows up with a renewal number and a shrug, they are not earning their compensation.

2. They Never Present Alternatives

When your renewal comes in, does your broker present it as a done deal? Or do they show you competitive quotes from other carriers, alternative plan designs, different funding strategies, and a clear analysis of your options?

A broker who simply delivers the renewal number without context or alternatives is not advocating for you. They may be prioritizing their carrier relationships over your interests, or they may simply not have the expertise to explore other options.

The best brokers present renewal season as a strategic planning opportunity. They come to the table with data, alternatives, and recommendations — not just a number.

3. They Cannot Explain Your Claims Data

Ask your broker to walk you through your claims data. If they cannot explain your loss ratio, your large claims experience, your pharmacy trends, and what is driving your renewal increase in clear terms, you have a problem.

Claims data is the foundation of any smart benefits strategy. It tells you whether you are overpaying, whether your population is healthy enough for alternative funding, where your biggest cost drivers are, and what strategies would have the most impact.

A broker who does not use claims data to drive strategy is operating blind — and so are you.

4. They Have Never Mentioned Alternative Funding

If you have more than 50 enrolled employees and your broker has never discussed level funding, self-funding, captive insurance, or any alternative to fully insured coverage, that is a significant red flag.

Alternative funding strategies can save employers 10 to 30 percent compared to fully insured plans. They are not appropriate for every group, but they should at least be evaluated for any employer of meaningful size.

Some brokers avoid these conversations because they are more complex, because they may reduce the broker's commission, or because the broker simply does not have experience with them. None of those are good reasons for you to miss out on potential savings.

5. You Do Not Know How They Are Compensated

Do you know exactly how much your broker earns from your account? Most employers do not.

Benefits brokers are typically compensated through commissions paid by the insurance carrier — usually a percentage of your premium. This means the more you pay in premiums, the more your broker earns. That is an inherent conflict of interest.

Some brokers work on a fee-based model instead, where they charge a flat fee for their services regardless of which carrier or plan you choose. This aligns their interests with yours.

Whether your broker is commission-based or fee-based, you deserve full transparency into their compensation. If your broker is evasive about how much they earn from your account, ask yourself why.

What to Do Next

If any of these signs sound familiar, it does not necessarily mean you need to fire your broker immediately. But it does mean you should evaluate whether you are getting the value you deserve.

Start by having a direct conversation with your broker. Ask them to explain their process, show you their claims analysis, present alternative strategies, and disclose their compensation. A good broker will welcome these questions.

If the answers are not satisfactory, consider getting a second opinion from an independent benefits advisor. A second opinion is typically free and can give you a benchmark for whether your current broker is performing well or falling short.

Changing brokers is not as disruptive as most employers think. Your coverage continues uninterrupted, and a competent new broker can manage the transition smoothly. The most important thing is making sure you have someone in your corner who is genuinely working to optimize your benefits program — not just maintaining the status quo.
